Luke Littler and Phil Taylor meet in ‘defining second’ for darts forward of SPOTY

Luke Littler and Phil Taylor have been brought together on the eve of BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year.
Littler, 17, has been nominated for both Young Sportsman of the Year and Sports Personality of the Year as he looks to become the first darts star to claim the award. The accolade even evaded the great Taylor, who managed second place in 2010.
Target Darts brought together the two star’s of their sport to come and try Target’s new omni darts system. “Phil is one of the greatest players to ever throw a dart, and what he has achieved is really inspiring for me,” Littler said.
“He has set such a high bar in the darts, and I’ve been honoured to have had such an amazing year in the sport so early in my career. To be in the running for BBC Sports Personality of the Year is the icing on the cake. The sport is growing so fast, and I’m excited to be a part of it and seeing what the future holds.”
While Taylor, himself, was full of praise for the new superstar of darts – admitting he doesn’t watch every darts match on TV, but is always sure to tune in when it’s Littler at the oche.
He said: “It was great to meet Luke and see his passion for the sport. I love him to bits, and what I admire about him is that he just wants to look after his mum and dad.
“He’s got exceptional talent which was evident when we threw together and you can see his confidence when he plays. If he can remain hungry, he will go all the way and become the best in the sport.
“He’s got a great chance of winning BBC SPOTY. All the youngsters are behind him, and he can 100% emulate what I did. And my money is on him to win the PDC World Championship this year.
“He just won the Grand Slam, and we can all see what he’s capable of. I’m really excited to see where his journey takes him, and I’ll be supporting him all the way.”
While Littler will be in Salford on Tuesday evening, his focus will be on the Alexandra Palace, where he is set to learn who he will face in his opening game on Saturday (December 21).
