Helen Worth’s departure from her iconic role as Gail Platt on Coronation Street is now just a week away. The Platt matriarch will say goodbye to Weatherfield this Christmas after revealing her – as of yet – unknown plans to her family.
Gail and Jesse Chadwick are set to tie the knot in a fairytale wedding on Christmas day, but it is clear the other Platt family members aren’t too keen on the idea. Family feuds are expected to get more intense over the festive period and worries that Gail might not get the happy ending in France she wants are rife.
In recent scenes, Gail watched her neighbours from afar and while standing outside her home, No. 8 Coronation Street, which was put up for sale earlier in the year, she agreed to Jesse’s plans to use the money from her house and his divorce to relocate to France. She later called a Platt family meeting to share the news with her mother and children.
However, it did not go to plan as not only did the revelation that their wedding was just two weeks away surprise her loved ones, but their plans to head off into the sunset and spend their days in Europe created plenty of tension.
David was livid, not only having to share his birthday with Christmas and his mother’s sixth wedding day, but also feeling that his mum had abandoned him with her plans to leave Weatherfield behind, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Coronation Street has created a touching video montage to commemorate the departure of one of its longest-serving characters. The video, which was originally shown at Helen’s farewell party in November, had everyone at the Bistro in tears as they celebrated her 50-year tenure on the show.
Now, fans have the opportunity to watch the eight-minute tribute and revisit some of Gail’s most iconic moments. From her first appearance in Weatherfield in 1974, her numerous weddings, dealing with difficult children and grandchildren, and narrowly escaping death at the hands of Richard Hillman.
Not to mention feuding with Eileen on the street, navigating a complicated relationship with her mother Audrey, and delivering a powerful monologue following Aidan’s suicide. It’s no secret Helen has been at the centre of some of Coronation Street’s most unforgettable storylines over the past 64 years and her farewell will surely shed a few tears around the country.
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
