The Lib Dems will launch misplaced Carly Rae Jepsen video starring Nick Clegg on one situation
The Lib Dems have promised to publish a long-lost video of Nick Clegg lip-synching to a pop song if Ed Davey makes it to Christmas No1.
Mr Davey had already pledged to do a sky dive if Love Is Enough, on which he sings alongside the Bath Philharmonia Young Carers’ Choir, hits the festive top spot.
But after the single failed to crack the top 20 in last week’s chart, Mr Davey upped the stakes.
In 2015, the Lib Dems spent £8,000 recreating the music video for Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen’s “I Really Like You”, with the then-Deputy Prime Minister taking the role originally played by Tom Hanks, in a bid to go viral ahead of that year’s election.
But after production was completed, it was quietly shelved as party officials feared it would attract ridicule.
The Mirror has been pursuing the release of the footage for almost a decade.
We revealed the existence of the clip after Mr Clegg was spotted by photographers filming the clip on the streets of Gravesend.
Since then, the video has taken on almost mythical status in Westminster, with only a handful of politicos claiming to have seen the footage first hand.
Insiders say just a single copy of the footage exists, on a memory stick in a locked drawer in Lib Dem HQ.
A Liberal Democrat spokesperson said: “Christmas is a time for giving, and this year the Liberal Democrats are fully embracing the festive spirit. If Ed and the young carers make it to Christmas Number 1, we will finally release the infamous Nick Clegg Carly Rae Jepsen video.
“We know this is something many people would really, really, really like to see. So we are asking everyone to spread the word, download the single and make it not one but two Lib Dem leaders singing and dancing on our screens this Christmas.”
Love is Enough by Bath Philharmonia Young Carers’ Choir feat. Ed Davey is available to download and stream on iTunes and Spotify and to watch on YouTube – all of which count towards the final chart position.
