Trump says ‘if there may be going to be a shutdown of presidency – let it start now’
It comes after the president-elect, 78, saw his revamped spending proposal dubbed ‘laughable’ and outvoted in the House of Representatives by a crushing margin on Thursday (December 19)
Donald Trump has called for an immediate “shutdown of government” after lawmakers rejected his “laughable” spending bill.
Taking to his own social media platform Truth Social the president-elect, 78, demanded the looming US Government shutdown “begin now, under the Biden Administration”. It comes after other politicians rejected a spending bill endorsed by the Republican leader, which left Congress no obvious pathway to avoid a fast-approaching shutdown.
“If there is going to be a shutdown of government, let it begin now,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Under the Biden Administration, not after January 20th, under ‘TRUMP’. This is a Biden problem to solve, but if Republicans can help solve it, they will!”
Trump dismissed a compromise between Republicans and Democrats on Wednesday, which the two parties had reached in order to try and prevent a shutdown days before the Christmas break. The MAGA boss instead urged his fellow Republicans in the House of Representatives to support a new deal.
House minority leader and the most senior Democrat in the chamber, Hakeem Jeffries, dubbed the new proposal “laughable”. Trump’s revamped scheme included a three-month extension of government funding and a removal of the amount the federal government could borrow.

“It’s like… increasing your credit card limit, while you don’t do anything to actually constrain spending,” said Republican Representative Chip Roy about the bill, which was rejected on Thursday by a 175-235 vote.
It comes after major Trump fan Steve Bannon suggested his orange pal could seek an unprecedented term in the White House.
If this happened it would see the President-elect upending the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution, being able to stay in office beyond 2028. Bannon spun the idea in a speech at the New York Young Republicans Club, after being spotted with Trump at MAGA headquarters in Mar-a-Lago earlier this month.
