Wrestling icon Rey Misterio Sr has died aged 66 after a recent tragedy, leaving behind family including WWE great Rey Mysterio Jr and his son Dominik.

The masked luchador, whose real name was Miguel Ángel López Días, made a name for himself across Mexico in a career which spanned from 1976 right up until last year. Mexican company AAA announced the news online, writing: “We regret the sensitive death of Miguel Ángel López Días, known as Rey Mysterio Sr.

“We send our most sincere condolences to his loved ones and raise our prayers to heaven for his eternal rest.”

Misterio Sr’s death comes just weeks after Rey Mysterio Jr’s father Robert Gutierrez died at the age of 76.

WWE Hall of Famer Mysterio paid tribute to his father, writing: “Father: thank you for giving me the life I have. You did more than set the example of how to love & maintain a strong marriage and father 4 boys, you were the example and passed every single time until your death with flying colours.

“Excellent husband, loving father, beautiful grandfather, incredible son & brother, and amazing father in law.”

The younger Rey Mysterio, who inherited his uncle’s in-ring name, also has a son, Dominik, who is himself a current WWE wrestler.

Dominik’s sister Aalyah and mum Angie have both also featured on WWE TV in the last couple of years, during an on-screen feud between father and son which culminated in a match at WrestleMania.

Dominik paid tribute to his great uncle online after his death, simply sharing a black heart alongside a number of photos from the glory years of the elder Misterio Sr’s wrestling career.
