‘Kidults’ deal with themselves to toys at Christmas – Polly Pocket to £500 Buzz Lightyear
Almost a pound out of every three quid spent on toys here in the UK is done by an adult buying for themselves or for another kidult, we embrace this data.
With our daily bread interwoven with some kind of digital device, be that laptop/tablet/computer or smartphone we say we’d like the ankle-biters to detox off their devices a bit, well, we should too.
What better way than a bit of analogue play, dusting your newly acquired Power Rangers vinyl figure collection, creating something with your digits to go on-display, remote controlling some four-wheeled action around your imagination fuelled obstacle course, all
good grin-inducing fun.
We’re certainly spoilt for choice; the toymakers have seen the increase in our frivolous spendy ways as we remember that Christmas isn’t just for the kids. Go on, treat yourself, naughty list or not.
From the toy giant that is Mattel, different brands though. The Polly Pocket one styled on the TV show, six characters and plenty of accessories to re-create favourite scenes and make up your own.
The Little People set, well, we wouldn’t want to open the box, it just looks so very shelf-worthy.
Giving a satisfying stomp as it lumbers about, light up radioactive spines down its back to the tail which you can whiplash with.
Not enough? Ok, how about the fire-breathing effect you can muster from its mouth?
The potty-mouthed character is totally legless, in fact, it is just decapitated Deadpool.
His head moves around, the eyes have motors for added realism, a selection of sounds and banter to be unleashed – over 600 pieces of racket and rants in fact and, with the app, there’s more X-rated content to be acquired.
Best wheels Batman ever rode? Forgt the modern versions this retro ride is “thwack-tastic”.
A diecast with both crime-fighters inside it has firing rockets and rocket tubes, a chain slasher blade and turbine jet exhaust on-board.
Holy smokes.
A highly detailed replica of the Toy Story character created from over 3,000 parts, 75 microchips and 23 servo motors this Robosen robot is the “big gift” of 2024.
There are also “micro servos” for the eye and mouth movements and all under smartphone or voice-control.
We can’t walk past a toy and not hot the try-me button, it’s as difficult to wander past a marble run and not set a sphere in motion.
This Star Wars themed set is Death Star shaped and has an X-Wing and TIE Fighter which fit onto the track.
You can also buy additional tack and tricks to extend your set-up for hours more fun.
Inside are 15 different sounds covering the spectrum of their collected, ahem, releases.
The blaster also releases fog rings which you can charge with an (included) odour before letting it go, banana scent or something a little more stinky.
Most certainly more of a mood-lamp level illumination but it’ll still command the centre of attention.
Stick it up on the wall and the shelf is the ideal spot to display your various vinyl figures of a similar era.
