Ruben Amorim admitted he was suffering, after seeing Manchester United get a festive stuffing at Old Trafford.

United crashed to a 3-0 home defeat to high-flying Bournemouth, thanks to goals from Dean Huijsen, Justin Kluivert and Antoine Semenyo. It leaves United languishing in 13th place – their lowest league position on Christmas Day since 1989.

Amorim’s flops were jeered off at the final whistle by fans who had not deserted the stadium, and the Portuguese coach admitted him and his team were in a bad place.

Amorim, who axed Marcus Rashford for the third game in succession, didn’t lose a home game in 18 months while in charge of Sporting Lisbon, but has now lost two in three weeks with United. He said: “The game was hard on us. We suffered again on set pieces and were a bit nervous.

“We have to fight this. We have to focus on the job and not what you feel in the stadium. Since the first minute there was a lot of anxiety. And after conceding goals, it is really hard. Everyone is suffering.

Manchester United's English defender #05 Harry Maguire, Manchester United's Portuguese defender #20 Diogo Dalot, Manchester United's Cameroonian goalkeeper #24 Andre Onana and Manchester United's Dutch striker #11 Joshua Zirkzee react to conceding the opening goal during the English Premier League football match between Manchester United and Bournemouth at Old Trafford in Manchester, north west England, on December 22, 2024.

“We are conceding too many goals and we have to address it. It is my responsibility to coach them. Losing 3-0 at home is really tough.

“And we will have to suffer again. It is a difficult moment, but we will try to win. We will do it until the end. We have to face it.”

Andoni Iraola’s team have now gone above champions Manchester City in the table following four wins in the last five. Bournemouth have climbed to fifth and Iraola said: “It was a mature performance. Not amazing, but it was solid.

“We kept playing the same way and pushing until the end. I value the 28 points we have. I think the amount of points we have is good. At Christmas, it is a good amount.”
