Family is charged £618 for simply two hotdogs at fashionable Christmas market on festive time out

A family were left mortified after they were charged an eyewatering £618 for two hotdogs at a popular Christmas market.

Laure Brumpton, 34, and her husband Alan, 37, were enjoying a day out at Nottingham‘s Christmas markets when they decided to buy their two children a festive hot dog treat.

However, Mr Brumpton was left shocked when instead of being charged the expected amount of £18 it instead cost over £600.

The apologetic stallholder quickly noticed the error and reassured the couple they would receive a full refund.

Over a week since Mr Brumpton paid for what has already been dubbed ‘the UK’s most expensive hot dog’ Mrs Brumpton claimed they are still waiting for a refund.

The mother from Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, filmed the incident and shared it on TikTok

In the video, the vendor can be seen holding the card reader as she repeatedly says ‘sorry’.

Mrs Brumpton then shared a picture of the receipt showing the £600 refund.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Mrs Brumpton described it as an ‘honest mistake’ but relented that it was ‘a lot of money to be missing just before Christmas’.

She said: ‘It’s just typical of our family. We have a lot of bad luck. And around this time of year. It’s a bit of a thing – don’t go out the house because anything could happen around Christmas.’

‘We were still charged for the sausages. I thought, especially because it was for the kids, I thought they’d at least get a free sausage. It was just a very expensive family day out. The kids actually said they tasted good.’

The owner of a cleaning business also revealed that her husband used Apple Pay and out of habit tapped it seemingly without looking at the amount.

The incident has prompted a strong reaction from social media users. One person joked it was ‘still a bargain’ for a Christmas market hot dog.

However, others failed to see the funny side with one highlighting the ‘inconvenience’ of the overcharge.

Another said: ‘I can’t believe she didn’t refund the full amount for the inconvenience and error.’

A different person was shock at the actual price tag, saying: ‘£18 for two hotdogs is crazy.’

One user advised: ‘This is why you should always check what they’ve typed in before you put your card on the reader.’

Someone else said: ‘What about the people that don’t notice if that happens.’
