Gavin & Stacey fans were treated to a host of returning characters as the hugely popular show drew to a satisfying conclusion on Wednesday evening

But some were left questioning why Barry Island chancer Dick Powell was left out of the Christmas Day finale – after wrongly assuming him to be Gwynn’s mystery lover.

Actor Gwynfor Roberts endeared himself to fans after playing the popular black market trader – the show’s only native Welsh speaker – for a handful of episodes.

However, he was notably absent for its much anticipated finale, despite the return of every other character.

Taking to X, a handful of its 12.5 million Christmas Day viewers admitted they were disappointed not to see him after initially thinking Powell could be Gwen’s new boyfriend – later revealed to be Dave Coaches.

‘Gwen and Dave Coaches ! I’m not going to recover from that shocker. Thought it might have been the mystery man Dick Powell but how wrong can you be?’ wrote one.

Show co-creator and actress Ruth Jones had previously confirmed Roberts would not feature during a press conference with her cast-mates in December.

‘I think in the original script we had Dick Powell,’ she explained. ‘There just wasn’t room for him, God bless him.’

The festive special kicked off in both Billericay and Barry as the family of Stacey Shipman and her husband Gavin prepared for a wedding – presumed to be between Neil “Smithy” Smith and Vanessa “Nessa” Jenkins.

However, it transpired the wedding was between Smithy and Sonia – his girlfriend from the 2019 Christmas Day episode – played by Laura Aikman
