Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran took out his anger on a water bottle minutes after he was sent off for stamping on Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar.

The Magpies beat Unai Emery’s side on Boxing Day at St James’ Park 3-0, with goals from Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak and Joelinton moving Newcastle up to fifth place in the Premier League. Eddie Howe’s side have now won their last three Premier League games but their win over Villa was handed a sizeable boost when Duran was sent off on 32 minutes with Newcastle already 1-0 up.

Chasing down a loose ball, Schar slide to clear a ball into touch whilst battling with Duran. However, in doing so it resulted in the Colombian forward stepping on Schar once, before doing so again in a move that looked more premediated.

The Villa striker was confronted by Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka and Dan Burn before referee Anthony Taylor decided to send Duran off. Clearly incensed with the decision, Duran then kicked off on the touchline, booting a water bottle after the sending off before he was hauled down the tunnel at St James’.

In the end, Newcastle went on to win the game 3-0, with Isak scoring the Magpies second before Joelinton added a third in injury time. And while there were some fans on social media who thought the decision to send Duran off was harsh, there were others who were absolutely convinced the Colombian went out to hurt Schar following their tussle for the ball.

One fan wrote on X: “It’s obviously a red card. The left foot is a slip, but the right foot definitely isn’t Anyone who’s played football before knows that you’d instinctively avoid planting your foot on the player, even if you’ve slipped. It’s clearly deliberate by Durán.”

A second said: “Schar wins a great challenge side on, his body from the force of the tackle moves him round Duran but Duran studs Schars backside and up his back. It’s a clear Red Card.”

A third wrote: “I’m sorry but even the most bias Villa fan can say Duran didn’t mean to do what he did there.” And a fourth said: “The only Villa fans who are saying that it is was a red for duran all have Watkins profile pics lol.”
