BREAKING Former Premier League striker arrested after home violence accusation
Former Watford forward Luis Suarez has been accused of domestic violence by his ex-wife and has reportedly been arrested.
He currently plays for second-tier Spanish side Almeria, with the 27-year-old Colombian said to have been read his rights after going to a police station with his lawyer.
Respected Almeria newspaper Ideal said the arrest had happened just over a fortnight ago and the player had been released without charge pending an ongoing court investigation.
Suarez, a Watford player from 2017 to 2020 although he never played a game for the Hornets after being loaned to three different Spanish sides, is understood to have denied any wrongdoing after appearing before a judge specialising in violence against women in a closed court hearing.
Ideal said his ex-wife reported him to police on December 4, “detailing a litany of alleged abuse and mistreatment” over several years.
It reported she claimed he had thrown objects at her during fits of anger, locked her in their home when he went to train, forced her to have sexual relations and lost his temper if she wore clothes he didn’t like.
Suarez has yet to make any official comment.
The footballer, who was farmed out as soon as he joined Watford, signed for LaLiga side Granda in October 2020 after becoming a hit on loan at Real Zaragoza and scoring 19 goals in 38 games.
Reports at the time said Watford had sold him for POUNDS 10 million despite him not playing a game in all the time he was at Vicarage Road.
He joined Olympique de Marseille in July 2022 and had a loan spell at Almeria before the club executed a right-to-buy option.
Suarez made his debut for Colombia in November 2020 and has since played a handful of games for his country.
Police in Almeria could not be reached this afternoon to comment on the arrest and court investigation reports.
