I woke as much as discover telecoms employees digging up my driveway -before they put in 40ft telegraph pole with out warning

A grandfather claims he woke up to telecoms workers digging across his driveway before they installed an ‘eyesore’ 40ft metal broadband pole outside his house.

Steven Graham, of Alkrington, Greater Manchester, claimed he received no warning from IX Wireless before the mast was erected on August 28 last year, damaging his drive, garden wall and ruining the appearance of his home.

Mr Graham said he already had a wooden pole at the front of his house, meaning he is now surrounded by them on both sides.

The homeowner is the latest to tell MailOnline about their telegraph pole nightmare, after others compared a similar looking mast to a ‘horrific rocket launcher‘.

‘It drives me mad. I cannot really see it. But the neighbours opposite me, it’s what they’re looking at,’ Mr Graham said.

‘I’m very unhappy about the whole thing.’

Mr Graham, a retired teacher, claimed he was getting ready to go out when he asked the workers what they were doing to his drive, which has now been repaired.

‘I was thinking there was a leak,’ he said. ‘They said, ”oh we’re putting your boxes in”. I said, ”what do you mean my boxes?” ‘

Alongside the huge metal pole, two green telecoms boxes have also been installed right outside the grandfather’s damaged driveway.

‘Now it’s obviously been tarmacked again. But I didn’t know they were doing it. They never told me they were doing it,’ he said.

The homeowner said he has tried to complain about the situation and have the pole removed, but has so far had no luck.

MailOnline has contacted IX Wireless for comment.

It comes after another homeowner claimed an ‘eyesore’ broadband pole installed just 15cm away from his garden has been causing a stink.

John Rowlands, from Gosport, Portsmouth, claimed no one on his estate was notified or consulted when telecoms firm Toob turned up and erected around ten huge masts.

One of the poles, allegedly towering at nearly 10-metres tall, was placed directly over Mr Rowlands’ garden, which he said has ruined his view.

To make matters worse, the homeowner claimed the mast is covered in smelly creosote – a tar-like substance – which is blown off the pole in the wind and has stuck to clothes on the washing line.

A spokesperson for Toob said: ‘We received overwhelming support for our Gosport network build and invested over £10million in the area while covering more than 30,000 premises.

‘In Field Close, the telegraph poles are currently serving households with our affordable highspeed full-fibre broadband, and our customers there are very happy with their upgraded service.

‘We always want to be considerate of the communities in which we work, and we plan our network very carefully to minimise any impact our build may have. We use telegraph poles that comply with industry standards, using typical pole preservation methods.

‘There are currently around four million telegraph poles across the UK that use the same methods.’
