A Texas school district has been forced to take copies of the Bible from its shelves due to a new state law targeting books with ‘sexually explicit’ content.

The holy book was removed after being flagged for its content, which the law deems inappropriate, as revealed in an email from Canyon Independent School District’s head teacher, Darryl Flusche. The leaked notice reveals that while the book has been banned from the school’s libraries, it’s still available in other district libraries. “House Bill 900, which passed during the last legislative session, establishes library standards that restrict content in school libraries,” Flusche wrote to parents.

He then quoted from “HB 900: Section 33.021. LIBRARY STANDARD,” which spells out what counts as “sexually explicit material” and also vowed to remove other books which do not meet the standards. The new law is thought to cause a similar issue up and down the US.

In Idaho, a Christian group is calling for frequent Bible readings in public schools. The superintendent’s notice has caused huge anger among the group. Flusche added: “Therefore, HB900 doesn’t allow numerous books, including the full text of the Bible, to be available in the school library,” and pointing out that “There are 30 titles available in the Canyon Junior High library that are Bible stories or portions of the Bible.”

The letter also adds that parents are welcome to go elsewhere for Bibles. He added: “Additionally, if any student would like to have a Bible, we have strong connections with local churches that are happy to donate a Bible upon request”, reports the Mirror.

“We are more than willing to assist a student who would like access to a Bible by arranging this from one of our partnering churches.” However, several parents are calling the move ridiculous.

Regina Kiehne, a mum with two children in the school, was outraged at the board meeting, saying: “It seems absurd to me that the Good Book was thrown out with the bad books.”

She was also angry about the safety worries in schools these days, adding: “In a day when we are needing security guards and bulletproof windows and doors, I think having the Word of God available to our children cannot only be preventative to violence, but also provide comfort and a sense of security in a chaotic world.

“It just makes sense to have the Word of God in our school library. After all, it is the book of wisdom. It is the bestselling book of all time; it is historically accurate, scientifically sound, and most importantly, life-changing.”

She highlighted the Bible’s notorious reputation as the most banned book, stating: “The only reason something is stolen is because it is valuable. The Bible holds great value. It should be valued in our Texas school system.” Last year, 10,000 books were banned in schools across the US, including titles such as To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Orwell’s 1984.
