Hotel rebrands ‘Gingerbread Man’ as ‘Gingerbread Person’ for its £35 Afternoon Tea, sparking accusations of ‘woke garbage’ from Corrie legend Charlie Lawson

A Northern Irish hotel has rebranded the the classic treat Gingerbread Man a ‘Gingerbread Person’, which Corrie legend Charlie Lawson has called ‘woke rubbish’.

The Old Inn in Crawfordsburn, County Down, has a Gingerbread Person listed as a sweet treat on its £35 Festive Afternoon Tea Menu.

Charlie Lawson, 65, who is a local, is best known as Jim McDonald in Coronation Street.

He has often been outspoken in the past about cancel culture and modern life. Earlier this year he slammed Corrie for its ‘woke storylines’.

Charlie (65) told Sunday Life: ‘I have to tell you, coming from me, I assumed the people of Northern Ireland would not fall for this wokery crap and it doesn’t matter where it is. I’m surprised it’s Crawfordsburn.

‘I’m staggered and very surprised that the people of Northern Ireland, never mind Crawfordsburn, have fallen for this crap.

‘I would have expected with cross-community back home that nobody would have fallen for this woke rubbish, but alas somebody seems to have. It’s just ridiculous, it’s childish bloody nonsense — a Gingerbread Person!’

The hotel offers a selection of sanwiches, scones and sweet treats in its afternoon tea, including a turkey, cranberry and stuffing sandwich, the Belfast Telegraph reported.

The menu also features Pigs in blankets, smoked salmon on wheaten and apple and cinnamon scones.

The Gingerbread Man is a fairytale about a biscuit that comes to life and leaps from an oven, fleeing a number of people but eventually being eaten by a fox.

It first appeared in print in America in 1875 in an issue of the Saint Nicholas magazine and has long been associated with Christmas time.

The well-known story has the character repeat the rhyme, ‘Run, run as fast as you can! You can’t catch me, I’m the Gingerbread Man!’
