Ruben Amorim subs Man Utd flop on 34 minutes as Gary Neville slams cheering followers

Ruben Amorim hooked Manchester United flop Joshua Zirkzee after just 34 minutes against Newcastle with his team 2-0 down.

Cheers rang out around Old Trafford as home supporters jeered the Dutch striker before he marched down the tunnel, having been replaced by midfielder Kobbie Mainoo. United legend Gary Neville, commentating for Sky Sports, was critical of the fans’ behaviour towards Zirkzee.

He said: “I actually feel sorry for him, I really do. I know that he’s earning a lot of money, but there is a human being in there, that’s basically been cheered off by the home fans. That is brutal.

“I’ve not seen that too many times at Old Trafford in the 43 years I’ve been coming here. He’s not been good, but they’ve all been poor.”

The ex-Red Devils defender went on to slam his former side, stating: “You are watching the worst pound-for-pound football club in the country, bar none. They are that bad.”

Amorim’s struggling side found themselves 1-0 down after just four minutes. Anthony Gordon half-volleyed a cross that deflected off defender Noussair Mazraoui into the six-yard area and landed perfectly for Alexander Isak to head home.

United, who kicked off slumped in 14th in the Premier League, were dominated on and off the ball by the visitors, who soon doubled their lead.

Gordon sent another cross into the box, with Newcastle midfielder Joelinton towering over the diminutive Lisandro Martinez to hammer a header past Amadou Onana.

It could have been even worse for the hosts, as Sandro Tonali hit the post and Isak spurned another great chance, as well as having a further strike that found the back of the net ruled out as he was offside.
