Bare-legged Brit revellers courageous climate hell to occasion right into a soggy New Year
Brave Brits care not a jot for severe weather warnings as they step out in style to welcome the New Year. The Met Office has forecast torrential rain, high winds, and snow
Bare-legged Brit revellers have been braving the weather hell to party into the New Year.
That is in spite of millions of partygoers having their celebration plans scuppered by torrential rain, gale-force winds, and snow. The Met Office has issued a warning for severe weather conditions across the UK, prompting Edinburgh and other cities to cancel their celebrations. But throwing caution to the wind (and snow and rain), a whole host of brave souls have taken to the streets with plenty of flesh exposed to see in 2025.
Without a coat or care in the world, the merrymakers aren’t letting a small thing like weather warnings stand in the way of them and seeing off 2024. Photos from revellers in Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh showed bare legs and crop tops, and little else in terms of warmth. Although the umbrellas were out in force.
London’s City Hall is keeping a close eye on the forecast, with Met Office Chief Meteorologist Andy Page stating: “Following a complex weather pattern featuring a series of low-pressure systems bringing strong winds, rain and even some snow, the forecast for the next few days has a much colder outlook.
“Heavy rain will affect parts of western and northern Scotland during Tuesday, with a separate band of rain moving south across northern England and North Wales through the afternoon.”
He continued: “Strong winds will also be a feature across southern Scotland and northeast England, which may lead to some travel disruption on New Year’s Eve.”
Brits are on high alert as weather warnings sweep across the nation, with snow set to smother Scotland and fierce winds and rain battering the north. The south isn’t being spared either, with yellow wind warnings issued for tomorrow.
The wild weather has already put a damper on fitness goals, axing numerous parkrun events. It’s a soggy start to 2025 in England and Wales, while Northern Ireland and Scotland face a chilly cocktail of sun and snow showers, reports the Mirror.
Met Office’s Rebekah Hicks warns: “A band of persistent and at times heavy rain will linger across Wales and northwest England through Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, before clearing southeast during Wednesday afternoon. This rain will be accompanied by strong and gusty winds.”
Edinburgh’s iconic Hogmanay street bash and concert, featuring Texas and the traditional fireworks, have been scrapped for the first time since 2006, officials confirmed Monday afternoon.
The organisers have cancelled several key events due to high winds and bad weather hitting Edinburgh, stating: “Due to ongoing high winds and inclement weather in Edinburgh city centre, we regret to announce outdoor events scheduled for Monday and December 31 are unable to go ahead on the grounds of public safety.
“The cancellation includes tonight’s Night Afore Disco Party in West Princes Street Gardens and, on December 31, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party, Concert in the Gardens and the midnight fireworks from Edinburgh Castle.”
They also expressed their disappointment, saying: “We have been unable to continue with preparations and necessary set-up for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay outdoor events due to extreme weather and forecast conditions. Therefore, for safety reasons, we, along with our event partners, have taken the difficult decision to cancel all outdoor events.”
