Lily Allen admits she ‘harboured resentment’ for former mentor Sir Elton John after ‘he ignored weak letter about sobriety’ – solely to grasp years later she by no means truly despatched it

Lily Allen has admitted she made a huge mistake that led her to harbour years of resentment for her former mentor Elton John. 

The Smile singer, 39, was managed by the music legend, 77, for several years and they became close friends. 

However their working relationship broke down and they parted ways, with her personal life spiralling ‘out of control’ in the years that followed. 

Lily decided to write to the Rocketman hitmaker at the time, sharing her sadness at the situation and how there was a ‘big Elton shaped hole in her life’, as well as being ‘vulnerable’ about her path to sobriety.

But she never received a response from Elton – something which she revealed she ‘harboured resentment towards him’ for years for. ‘I thought it was mean of him actually,’ she said on her Miss Me? podcast in May. 

Years later Lily moved to America and realised she had made a huge mistake when she found the letter while unpacking boxes. She had never actually sent it.

Sharing a throwback clip with her best friend and podcast co-host Miquita Oliver on Instagram on Tuesday, Lily said: ‘I used to be managed by Elton John. He would call me like once every couple of weeks to check in and say hi and make sure I was okay. 

‘And there were some times in that period where I wasn’t okay.’

She added: ‘We parted ways and I wrote this long letter to say how sad I was about the situation and there was a big Elton shaped hole in my life. 

‘And over the next few years as my life began to sort of spiral out of control I held much resentment for the fact that I’d made myself very vulnerable in this letter and told him all about my sobriety and I was quite cross with him for a few years.’

‘For not responding?’ Miquita asked, to which Lily continued: ‘And I thought it was mean of him actually, and then when I moved here to America I was unpacking and I found the letter. 

‘I never sent it [laughs]. Elton if you’re listening, which you’re probably not, I love you and I no longer harbour that resentment towards you.’

Back in 2008, the pair had a heated exchange at the GQ Men of the Year Awards at London’s Royal Opera House.

When Lily and Elton got up on stage to host the ceremony, no one predicted quite such fireworks.

The pair began quarrelling in front of a shocked celebrity crowd when Lily began gulping down champagne as the pair handed out awards.

Lily, decked out in an extravagant Dolce and Gabbana ballgown and Chopard jewellery, soon began slurring, swearing and ad-libbing.

And when she introduced Carol Vorderman to the stage with a verbal tirade, saying ‘F***’ no fewer than five times in the same sentence, her co-host decided enough was enough.

When Lily came to announce ‘…and now the most important part of the night’, Elton chipped in ‘What? Are you going to have another drink?’

She fired back: ‘F*** off Elton. I am 40 years younger than you and have my whole life ahead of me!’

It comes after a friend of the pair told Daily Mail.com on Christmas Eve that Lily has split up with David Harbour after five years of marriage (Pictured in September) 

A clearly rattled Elton replied ‘I could still snort you under the table’. To which she replied: ‘F*** off. I don’t know what you are talking about.’

Lily was reportedly spotted using celebrity dating app Raya as rumours swirled her marriage to the Stranger Things star, 49, was on the rocks.

The star had a short, tongue-in-cheek bio on her Raya a profile saying she was ‘Looking for someone to start couples therapy with,’ and indicated that she is ‘visiting Los Angeles from New York’.
