List of New Year’s Eve occasions cancelled as monster storm ruins plans for Brits
New Year’s Eve festivities up and down the country have been cancelled due to severe weather warnings with rain and wind causing hell, but the London fireworks display is set to go ahead
Edinburgh’s Hogmanay fireworks cancelled due to bad weather in Scotland
The severe weather has dampened New Year festivities, with several major events cancelled due to severe weather forecasts.
The country is set to welcome 2025 in the most British way – gloomy weather packed with high winds and torrential rainfall. The terrifying weather front has swept across the UK today, leaving NYE events organisers in turmoil.
However, it’s not all doom and gloom. The biggest fireworks display in the UK – and Europe – is looking like it will go ahead as weather conditions remain calm, according to Sky News. National correspondent Tom Parmenter said: “Conditions are looking good on the banks of the Thames – just a gentle breeze as darkness fell so organisers are hopeful the fireworks will all go ahead as planned.
“This whole area is effectively locked down in this part of Westminster in central London. 100,000 people have tickets and will be on site from 8pm this evening. They are no doubt going to be treated to another fireworks spectacular right in the heart of London.”
Blackpool has also cancelled its coastal New Year’s Eve fireworks display due to high winds predicted. Blackpool Council described the call as a “tough decision”. However, the council confirmed that a projection show set to music will still light up the night.
On Monday afternoon, it was announced that Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations expected on Monday and Tuesday were cancelled, including the street party and concert in Princes Street Gardens headlined by Texas, and that the midnight fireworks are cancelled – the first since 2006, Mirror Online reported.
The organisers said: “Due to ongoing high winds and inclement weather in Edinburgh city centre, we regret to announce that outdoor events scheduled for Monday and December 31 are unable to go ahead on the grounds of public safety. The cancellation includes tonight’s Night Afore Disco Party in West Princes Street Gardens and, on December 31, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party, Concert in the Gardens and the midnight fireworks from Edinburgh Castle.
“We have been unable to continue with preparations and necessary set-up for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay outdoor events due to extreme weather and forecast conditions. Therefore, for safety reasons, we, along with our event partners, have taken the difficult decision to cancel all outdoor events.”
