Matheus Cunha banned for violent conduct in Wolves meltdown as star learns destiny
Matheus Cunha has been handed a two-game ban by the FA for swiping the glasses off the face of an Ipswich Town security guard after Wolves‘ 2-1 defeat in December.
The Brazilian striker was involved in ugly scenes at Molineux following Wolves’ loss to the Tractor Boys, with Cunha spotted after the full-time whistle clashing with the member of staff and grabbing the glasses off his face.
Days after the incident, which happened on Saturday, December 14, the FA announced Cunha had been charged with having “acted in an improper manner after the final whistle”.
And Cunha’s ban has now been confirmed by the FA, meaning Wolves will be without their talismanic forward for two fixtures as they battle to stay in the Premier League this season. He has also been fined £80,000.
An FA spokesperson said: “Matheus Cunha has been suspended for two games and fined £80,000 following the Premier League fixture between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town on Saturday, December 14, 2024.
“The forward was charged with misconduct and it was alleged that he acted in an improper manner after the final whistle. He admitted the charge and the sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent regulatory commission. Full written reasons for this case will be published in due course.”
Cunha has 10 goals and four assists in 19 league games this season and has been on a fine run of form since the incident. He scored against Leicester City in a 3-0 win and scored and assisted in a 2-0 victory over Manchester United over Christmas.
He was substituted at halftime after suffering an injury in Wolves’ 2-2 draw with Tottenham at the weekend. He will only miss one league game against Nottingham Forest, as the second part of his suspension will be served when Wolves face Bristol City in the FA Cup on January 11.
