West Ham have been dealt a major injury blow with Jarrod Bowen having been confirmed to have suffered a fractured foot in their defeat by Liverpool.
The Hammers announced Bowen’s injury in a brief statement on their website.
‘West Ham United can confirm Jarrod Bowen sustained a fractured foot injury in Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Liverpool,’ the statement read.
‘The injury to his left foot, picked up in the first half at London Stadium, will sideline the Hammers captain heading into the New Year.’
Bowen had been forced off on the hour mark of West Ham’s dismal 5-0 home defeat by Liverpool on Sunday.
The England international had limped off following a challenge with Alexis Mac Allister.
West Ham have announced captain Jarrod Bowen suffered a fractured foot against Liverpool
Bowen had initially played on after sustaining the injury, before coming off in the 60th minute
The loss of Bowen will be a major blow to Julen Lopetegui’s underperforming side
West Ham have not revealed how long Bowen is expected to be out for, but the captain’s absence will be another major blow to Julen Lopetegui’s side.
Bowen is the Hammers’ top scorer in the Premier League this season with five goals in 19 matches.
He has also registered four assists in the top flight so far this campaign, the only West Ham player to have laid on more than one goal.
Pressure increased further on Lopetegui following the heavy defeat to Liverpool at the London Stadium, a result which leaves his side 13th in the Premier League table.
West Ham are next in action against champions Manchester City on January 4, before they travel to Villa Park to face Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round on January 10.
Bowen’s injury leaves West Ham short of another attacking option, with Michail Antonio having already been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign with a broken leg.
Antonio was discharged from hospital on Tuesday, 24 days after the 34-year-old was extracted from his £260,000 Ferrari following a horror car crash.
Antonio, West Ham’s all-time Premier League goal scorer, is out of contract in the summer and a decision has not been made over a potential extension.
It is thought, however, that discussions will take place in the near future.
