Callan Rydz responded to fans’ brutal chants about his hair ahead of the Newcastle-born thrower facing Michael van Gerwen in the Paddy Power PDC World Darts Championship
Callan Rydz‘s unique hairstyle continues to “astound” fans after he responded to World Darts Championship punters’ brutal chants.
Rydz advanced to a thrilling quarter-final showdown with darts heavyweight Michael van Gerwen after staging a remarkable comeback against Welsh contender Rob Owen in a nail-biting 4-3 victory. It was during this gripping match that Rydz’s hair became the subject of attention.
A wasp landed on his head but it wasn’t just the pesky Ally Pally insect that got people talking; Rydz also found himself responding to cheeky crowd chants mocking his “rubbish hair”. Fans online also joined in, with one writing on X: “Surely hair transplant companies are throwing themselves at Callan Rydz”
Another added: “Still astounded by Callan Rydz’s hair.”
After his win, Rydz addressed the fans’ chants and said: “They can say what they say, I’ll not cry about it.”
He added: “I’ve had worse off loads of people back home. My best friends, they rip the mick out of us all the time. The crowd won me that game, I didn’t win it.
“I’m all for the banter – I can give it them just as much as they can give it me, if I meet them individually. I love the banter with them and I think they won me this game, I didn’t win it through darts, so I’ve got to thank them,” reports the Mirror.
In a touching moment, Rydz dedicated his victory to his late grandmother, reflecting on a photo and heartfelt memories: “I saw a photo this week of me celebrating Christmas with my grandma who I lost and it really hurt, so this is for her.”
A shaky performance on the double attempts saw Owen falter in his first-ever fourth-round match, allowing Rydz the chance to snatch a narrow 4-3 victory with a double 10 finish a shot he executed perfectly. Despite notching up a notable 97 average, Rydz admitted to mixed feelings about his game.
“I didn’t feel like I played good there but I have seen the average and I was decent,” he shared. “I have a day off tomorrow to recharge the batteries. I think Rob is a great lad and just the crowd got me through this game, so thank you very much everyone.”Rydz’s win takes him to his third quarter-final at Ally Pally, backing up his previous triumph over Dimitri van den Bergh who had labeled him “unstable”.
