Josh Windass scores ‘aim of the century’ that is ‘higher than David Beckham’s’
Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass scored one of the goals of the season against Derby, as he lobbed the goalkeeper from inside his own half to leave the Sky Sports pundits in disbelief
Josh Windass wowed footie fans with a “ridiculous” lob from the halfway line against Derby that some are saying was “better than David Beckham’s” own iconic goal.
Sheffield Wednesday took on their Championship rivals at Hillsborough, emerging victorious with a 4-2 scoreline. Windass, son of Hull City legend Dean, was already on a hot streak, having found the net in his previous four league matches.
He once again grabbed the limelight against Derby by deciding to shoot from just beyond the centre circle in his own half. His spectacular effort soared over Rams’ keeper Jacob Zetterström and sparked wild celebrations among the home supporters.
The goal was so stunning that one commentator couldn’t help but exclaim: “Here’s Windass. He’s going for goal you know. He’s going for goal you know! Oh my word! That is unbelievable! Josh Windass!”
The Sky Sports panel were almost speechless when watching the replay. Paul Merson managed a “Wow, that’s amazing.”
While host Julian Warren struggled to find the fitting words, eventually settling on “It’s absolutely extraordinary. Better than Beckham? It’s up there. Unreal says Paul Merson. Better than Beckham says Clinton Morrison. That was special. Josh Windass putting Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 up,” reports the Mirror.
But it wasn’t only in the studio where Windass was showered with praise.
Fans flooded Twitter with praise for Josh Windass after his mind-boggling goal. One admirer gushed: “One of the best goals you’ll ever see from Josh Windass. The vision, the execution. Was ten yards inside his own half. Incredible goal.”
Another chuffed fan said: “Congrats to Josh Windass for scoring the goal of the century. Yet another accolade to add to Sheffield Wednesday’s illustrious history. WOW,” and yet another tweeted: “Goal of the season is now officially closed in the @efl No one beating mr windass.”
It’s all coming up roses for Josh Windass as he keeps smashing records for Danny Rohl’s squad. Chalking up ten Championship goals this season, he’s at the top of his game in England’s second division like never before.
The Owls had a day to remember as club icon Barry Bannan put them ahead against Derby, followed by Windass’ sensational net-botherer doubling their advantage. Djeidi Gassama piled on more pressure before Jerry Yates clawed one back for the visitors.
However, Anthony Musaba wasn’t about to let that dampen the party, slotting one home towards the final whistle while Ebou Adams lobbed in a consolation for Derby during injury time.
