Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold could be set for a nine-figure payday should he choose to join Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old is inexplicably out of contract at the end of the 2024/25 season, with Real Madrid mooted as the most likely landing spot for Alexander-Arnold. At the turn of the year, the Spanish side were allowed to begin talks with Alexander-Arnold over a move to Madrid in the summer on a free, with Liverpool set to lose one of their best players for nothing.

Recently, Real Madrid had a bid, which would have seen the defender leave Anfield mid-season, for Alexander-Arnold rejected by Liverpool, who still harbour hopes of tying him down to a new long-term deal.

The move by Real Madrid to sign Alexander-Arnold in January is viewed as a strategic decision which will allow for them to bring him in come the summer. And should that work, the Liverpool star will be set to make an eye-watering amount of money.

The England international will see his current wage packet of £180,000 rise, but will also stand to make a substantial amount thanks to the signing-on fee he will receive. Last summer, in moving to join Real Madrid, Kylian Mbappe’s signing-on fee as a free agent was £128m, which will be paid over the five-years of his contract.

While Alexander-Arnold will not match Mbappe’s signing-on fee, he will still receive a huge sum from Los Blancos. Speaking about Alexander-Arnold’s future prior to the turn of the year, the Athletic’s David Ornstein said: “Reports in Spain suggest Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid is getting closer.

“My information is that nothing is decided just yet and that we need to bring a bit of calm to this situation. All options remain open and that’s largely because his camp have not been able to hold any formal negotiations yet.

“They cannot do that until January 1st, but that is now very soon. Once that day arrives, they can speak freely to clubs outside of England and they’re allowed to sign a pre-contract agreement to join as a free agent to join in the summer of 2025.

“What we do know is that Real Madrid want to sign him. They are extremely keen and so it presents him with a massive decision to make.”
