Man Utd supply Harry Maguire new contract as Ruben Amorim reverses Erik ten Hag resolution
Ruben Amorim has given Harry Maguire an ultimatum as Manchester United are set to offer the £80m flop a new contract despite him being close to the door under Erik ten Hag
Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Amad Diallo are closing in on signing new contracts.
United have agreed to trigger the 12-month extension included in Maguire’s current deal. While Diallo, 22, is close to agreeing a new contract altogether, as reported in Daily Star Sport, to reward the recent progress he has made with United.
England defender Maguire was due to become a free agent in June and is allowed to talk to other clubs. But United boss Ruben Amorim wants the 31-year-old to remain at Old Trafford.
The news is a huge boost to Maguire, following the struggles he had under former boss Erik ten Hag. Maguire was stripped of the captaincy and even dropped from the team at various stages of Ten Hag’s reign.
But Amorim values the centre back and wants him to become one of the team’s leaders again. He said: “Amad is near (to agreeing a new deal), while Harry Maguire’s going to trigger our option.
“I spoke with him this morning and I told him he has to improve his game on the pitch, because we need him a lot. And he also has to improve as a leader, we all know the situation he had here, but we are happily going to trigger the option.”
The Star reported in October how United were willing to listen to offers for Harry Maguire this month – starting at just £10million – when he was deemed surplus to requirements by Ten Hag.
He nearly left the club for £30m in 2023, but a proposed move to West Ham collapsed and Maguire later earned a reprieve with Ten Hag before being rocked by injury problems.
United paid a world record fee for a defender when they signed Maguire for £80m from Leicester City in July 2019, breaking the previous record of £75m set by Liverpool for Virgil van Dijk.
He has divided opinion since – whether on the domestic or international front.
