Snow warning is upgraded to amber for Britain: Met Office says heavy wintry showers and freezing rain might trigger chaos with alerts in place for a lot of the UK
More than a foot of snow will hit parts of Britain this weekend after the Met Office issued two amber warnings and temperatures fell to -8C (17F) this morning.
The UK could see rural communities becoming cut off, stranded vehicles on roads and delayed rail and air travel amid blizzards and freezing rain over the coming days.
The Met Office today issued two new amber weather warnings for snow and ice, which begin tomorrow evening and warn up to 1ft 4in (40cm) could accumulate.
The first amber warning for snow covering most of Wales and the Midlands is in place from 6pm tomorrow until midday on Sunday. The second, a snow and ice warning for most of northern England, was issued from 9pm tomorrow to 11.59pm on Sunday.
These warnings come on top of the existing yellow snow warning for most of England and the whole of Wales from 12pm tomorrow until 11.59pm on Sunday.
Separately, an ice warning has been activated for Scotland, Northern Ireland, North East England and North Wales from 4pm today until 10am tomorrow. And a yellow snow warning is in place for Scotland from 0am on Sunday until 12pm on Monday.
