Barcelona will be able to spend money in the January transfer window without restriction, the club have confirmed, but Dani Olmo has still not been registered.

LaLiga informed the club that they are no longer subject to strict financial intervention after they received the €28million (£23.2m) missing from one of the two investors for VIP seats at the soon-to-be renovated Camp Nou.

However, Olmo and Pau Victor remain unregistered. Barcelona president Joan Laporta and other senior figures were spotted working at the club’s offices into the early hours on Saturday in an attempt to officially add both players to their roster.

But with the stand-off continuing, they are said to be prepared to take the matter to court. Various reports have claimed Barcelona are confident they will be able to register Olmo and Victor after finding a creative solution to their off-field headache.

Their attempt to register the duo for the second half of the season was rejected by LaLiga after they failed to prove they had the necessary financial assurances in time.

Olmo only joined Barcelona from RB Leipzig in the summer in a £50m deal and was registered on a temporary arrangement until the end of 2024. In recent days, the club pushed to re-register both him and Victor to allow them to play beyond December 31.

Barcelona return to action on Saturday against Barbastro in the Copa del Rey and as it stands, Olmo and Victor will not be eligible to play.

It is believed Olmo has emerged as a target for several Premier League clubs, including Manchester City and Manchester United.

A clause in his contract reportedly means he is now free to walk away but his representative, Andy Bara, has insisted he will remain loyal to Barcelona. Olmo cannot be loaned out and he also cannot be re-signed as a free agent.

‘Barcelona is his first and last option,’ Bara said.

But Bara also added: ‘Dani loves playing games, not watching them.’

Laporta is said to be determined to outline the club’s position in a press conference which could take place in the coming days, perhaps as early as Sunday.

But should the case go to court, the outlook is bleak for Barcelona with two previous rulings going against them, upholding LaLiga’s refusal to register the players.

Boss Hansi Flick, meanwhile, admitted he was not best pleased with the situation.

‘It’s normal. To be honest, I wasn’t happy with the situation either,’ said Flick. ‘The players aren’t happy either, but we have to accept that we are professionals.

‘I’m optimistic, but we have to wait for the decision.’

Asked if he had discussed the issue with Laporta, he added: ‘When I speak with the president it’s private and will remain private.’

Olmo has made 15 appearances to date this season, scoring six goals.
