Liverpool supply Trent Alexander-Arnold colossal £78m contract in Real Madrid switch warfare
Trent Alexander-Arnold has been offered a massive new contract at Liverpool which would make him one of the highest paid players in the Premier League
Liverpool are said to have offered Trent Alexander-Arnold a five-year contract worth a staggering £78million to persuade him to snub Real Madrid.
The Premier League and Champions League leaders want their hometown hero and vice-captain to commit his future to the club. But he will be available on a free transfer when his contract expires this summer.
According to the Mirror, the Spanish side are believed to have put a similar £300,000 a week deal on the table for the 26-year-old, which would be further boosted by a colossal signing on free if he makes the move to the Bernabeu.
Madrid enquired on New Year’s Eve whether Liverpool would be open to selling Alexander-Arnold during the January transfer window, only to be met with a firm rebuttal from the British football giants.
But the fullback is said to have been left in a dilemma, torn between securing his legacy as a Kop idol with his childhood team, or becoming a new ‘Galactico’ for the biggest club in world football.
According to the Mirror, Liverpool’s hierarchy believe they cannot do anything more to convince Alexander-Arnold that his future lies with Arne Slot’s Reds, who are favourites for the Premier League title.
Contrary to speculation, the Mirror reports that there have been no demands from the West Derby defender to be handed the Liverpool captaincy as part of any contract discussions with his agent.
That is because the Scouse star knows he is the natural successor to 33-year-old Virgil van Dijk, when the Dutch defensive colossus’ time as a regular first teamer at Anfield comes to an end.
Madrid are reportedly willing to pay a fee of around £20m for Alexander-Arnold. Their first choice right-back, Dani Carvajal, 33, is out injured with a torn ACL and not expected to play again until next season.
However, Liverpool have no intention to sell one of their star players in the middle of a title challenge and the player himself is said to be against leaving at this stage and causing a major problem for the Reds.
Alexander-Arnold has remained tight-lipped on negotiations, previously commenting: “I have signed four or five contract extensions and none of those have been played out in public – and this one won’t be either.”
It’s understood that Liverpool are more confident of both Van Dijk and goal machine Mohamed Salah agreeing new two-year contracts, though as it stands both could also leave for free this summer.
All three players are now entitled to talk to foreign clubs about their future, with Liverpool facing the nightmare prospect of losing arguably their three best players for nothing, if new deals cannot be inked with the trio.
