Major DIY chain broadcasts replace as 74 shops face chop – closing down gross sales start
Homebase is the latest brand to face the wrath of the dwindling high street as 74 stores are at risk of closure or sale – and now the closing down sales have started
A major DIY chain has issued an update about their 74 stores facing the shutters – with two branches launching closing down sales.
Homebase is the latest brand to feel the heat of the relentless high street purge after it plummeted into administration back in November.
While some branches still await their fate, stores in Bridgend and Bangor, Wales, have launched sales leading savvy shoppers to share their bargain buys on social media.
These are just the latest two branches to hold closing down sales as other sites facing closure have been spotted up and down the country with ‘everything must go’ signs; including Lancaster, Morecambe and Biggleswade.
Since going into administration in November, billionaire owner of The Range and Wilko, Chris Dawson, struck up a rescue deal for some of the business.
In a bid to salvage some of the company, the deal looks to save 70 stores along with 1,600 jobs and to keep the Homebase brand. However, this meant that 74 branches and around 2,000 employees were left at risk of closure and redundancy.
Just a week later, Teneo – the administrators for Homebase – put the 74 branches up for sale. While a deadline of November 29 was set for potential buyers to scoop up any of the 74 at risk, it is currently unclear whether how many, or if any at all, will be saved.
Interestingly, although both Bridgend and Bangor are both holding closing down sales, only the Bridgend store was up for sale – Bangor was not.
Teneo declined to comment when the stores will close down, according to The Sun. According to a spokesperson who spoke to the newspaper, all stores will remain open and trading will continue – even those scooped up by CDS Superstores, the owners of The Range and Wilko.
The spokesperson continued: “From January 2025, Homebase will transfer around 10 stores each month to CDS which will be relaunched as The Range Superstores.
“Talks with prospective buyers for the remainder of the stores are progressing.”
