‘Bunk-Off Monday’ will see one million employees pull a sickie as UK’s blanketed in snow
With large parts of Britain blanketed in snow, experts reckon around one in every 30 employees will have a crack at claiming they can’t get into work this morning
Sickies are set to double on Monday, January 6 as ‘Bunk-Off Monday’ sees a million workers call in ill with Britain blanketed in snow.
Experts reckon one in every 30 employees will claim they can’t travel to work this morning. BrightHR, which monitors absence at 65,000 UK companies, saya the number of absent staff generally rockets by 70% in cold spells.
The economy faces a £200million bill for other staff covering absent colleagues’ workload.
Alan Price, CEO at BrightHR, said: “Employers should brace for Bunk-Off Monday, with data from our absence management software indicating hordes of staff will pull a sickie to avoid the Arctic weather and spend a day cosied up at home.
“Severe weather always has a significant impact on workplace attendance. For some staff, the severe weather is just a handy way to get an extra day in bed.”
The nation was covered in several inches of snow yesterday, causing chaos on motorways, railways and runways.
Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds airports closed on Sunday morning, causing flight cancellations, with more bad weather on the way.
Met Office Chief Forecaster Jason Kelly, said: “Some significant accumulations of snow are possible across parts of Wales, the Midlands and northern England in particular, with as much as 20-30cm over high ground of mid and north Wales and 30-40cm over parts of the Pennines.”
