Liverpool vs Man Utd kick off choice name as extreme snow places match in danger
Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday afternoon remains in doubt after a decision on whether the match will go ahead was delayed
Liverpool’s clash with Manchester United today, Sunday January 5 is on the brink as officials put off the call to postpone due to severe snowfall hitting Merseyside.
Anfield was blanketed with the white stuff overnight, causing major safety woes and risky icy conditions in the North. The Reds are set to welcome United at 4.30pm – but whether the match will be given the thumbs up or hit by postponement hangover relies on an urgent conversation slated for noon.
According to Mirror Football, the Safety Authority bigwigs are pencilled in for a rematch discussion midday, clinging onto hope that the skies might brighten up soon.
In an official statement, Liverpool said: “A safety meeting was held this morning to assess the weather and travel conditions for today’s fixture against Manchester United at Anfield.”
“At this stage the match is planned to go ahead as normal and every effort is being made to get the game on. A further safety meeting will take place again at midday to assess the latest conditions.”, reports the Mirror.
“We will update supporters just as soon as we can. Please take extra care out there, Reds.”
Other fixtures weren’t so lucky, with Chesterfield vs Gillingham and Fleetwood against AFC Wimbledon getting the boot in League Two, while Huddersfield Town Women and Norton Ladies, plus AFC Fylde Women and Middlesbrough also falling foul of the freeze.
Air travellers aren’t dodging the disruption either, as Leeds Bradford, Manchester, Liverpool John Lennon and Birmingham airstrips were all out of action this AM thanks to the hefty snow dump.
The UK’s transport network is in chaos, with trains into Liverpool Lime Street Station cancelled until at least midday. National Rail, Great Western Railway, Northern, ScotRail and TransPennine Express have all reported service disruptions.
This comes on the heels of a severe weather warning from the Met Office, following snowfall of up to 25cm in some regions.
