Popular child identify vanishes off prime 100 listing as Margot Robbie conjures up dad and mom

The latest list of the top 100 baby names for boys and girls has been released, and while some old favourites are still at the top, 2025 signifies the end of one name in particular

A popular baby name has completely vanished off the top 100 list as Olivia and Muhammad stay dominant – along with a new addition inspired by a Hollywood actress.

While some parents prefer classic names, others opt for something more unusual. And a name that was once all the rage in 2023 has now disappeared from the latest baby name data.

The newest list of the top 100 baby names for boys and girls reveals some old favourites still reigning supreme. However, 2025 marks the end of the line for one name in particular and the rise in popularity for a name belonging to a certain Australian bombshell who we often see on our screens…

According to BabyCentre’s data, Nova has fallen out of favour. The celestial-inspired name, which saw a massive surge in popularity in 2023 and earned 94th place in the list, has suddenly and completely dropped off the chart, reports the Mirror.

Faye Mingo, Chief Marketing Officer at BabyCentre, commented: “The top names for both boys and girls have remained largely consistent with last year’s picks, but a few notable trends have emerged. Surname-inspired names for boys like Hunter and Harrison are on the rise, and there’s a trend of girls’ names ending in ‘a,’ like favourites Olivia and Amelia.

“It’s clear that while parents are embracing some fresh twists, the classic choices still hold strong, and parents are looking for a name with timeless appeal.”

It looks like it’s the end of ‘Nova’s’ popularity for now. But, it looks like Australian actress and Hollywood star Margot Robbie, who recently gave birth to a little boy, has inspired many fellow parents when choosing a name for their baby.

New entries on the list include ‘Margot’, most likely inspired by the Barbie star who is proving to be cinema’s sweetheart over the last couple of years. The name Margot has entered at number 88 on the list and another new addition ‘Gabriella’ is welcomed at number 99.

This comes on the heels of the Office for National Statistics (ONS) releasing its annual figures for the most popular baby names in England and Wales last month. Likewise, the name Lilly, a long-standing favourite, has sparked some debate over its spelling.

The double L version seems to be losing favour, while the single L variant, Lily, is blossoming – could this be to do with the controversial model Lily Phillips?
