Tranmere Rovers have jokingly claimed they wouldn’t want to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold after Roy Keane suggested he could end up their following his display for Liverpool against Manchester United.

The Reds full-back was at the centre of the action at Anfield on Sunday evening, with Alexander-Arnold’s defensive display called into question on a number of occasions. It was down his flank United attacked frequently in the first half, and exploited in the second when they scored their two goals through Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo.

“Trent’s defending has been awful today,” Keane said at half-time. “We’re talking about him going to Real Madrid but he’ll be going to Tranmere Rovers after this performance.”

However, in a surprise twist, Tranmere have jokingly offered up a response to Keane’s suggestion on social media. The club, who sit 20th in League Two, have claimed they wouldn’t want the world class defender anyway. Taking to X, Tranmere wrote: “Trent to Tranmere, Roy? Nah, we’re alright thanks.”

And it’s safe to say football fans on social media enjoyed the interaction. “Admin, you deserve a raise!” wrote one fan. A second added: “Wouldn’t have him selling hot dogs, never mind playing!” A third said: “Brilliant response absolutely brilliant.”

However, there were some Tranmere fans who lost their heads following the response. “You wouldn’t think we are in a relegation scrap, possible dropping out of the football league,” said one fan.

A second wrote: “He’d fit in well with our squad as he’s also f***ing useless. Rattling the teleclappers has made my Sunday night however.” And a third said: “Deserved to go down for this.”

Alexander-Arnold’s contract is up at the end of the season – and he looks destined for a move to sunny Spain. According to the The Mirror, Liverpool have offered Alexander-Arnold a huge £78million five-year contract to try and keep the England defender at Anfield.

But there’s a similar £300,000 a week deal on the Bernabeu table for the 26-year-old and, in addition, he could expect a huge signing on fee from the Spanish giants if he joins in the summer as a free agent. As of January 1, Trent is free to open into negotiations with Los Blancos over a Bosman move in the summer.
