British office branded a ‘cult’ after managers put up poster telling staff to come back in even once they’re unwell and work out of hours – as a result of they’re all one huge ‘household’
An employee has shared a list of ‘nightmare fuel’ rules for his workplace, who have branded his company ‘a cult’.
The person, who works in an office, took to Reddit to share a photo of a laminated notice pinned to a board in the tea room, which contained fourteen ‘reminders’ on what ‘makes a great team.’
Taking to the subreddit r/CasualUK on 7 January, the Teesside-based worker, who goes by u/punkywalrus, highlighted his frustration at the list, which appeared to be have been pinned up over the Christmas holiday.
The post has since 6,000 upvotes and more than 2,300 comments from concerned Redditors, who jumped to the employee’s defence.
Alongside the photo of the list, the office worker wrote: ‘Got back to work today, management have put this up in the tea room. What type of year am I in for?’
What followed was an exhaustive list of bizarre rules, which began with a statement that reads: ‘This is not a job, this is a vocation.’
The first rule penned by management is, ‘There are certain attributes which makes us a great team,’ followed by, ‘We happily do a lot of extra work in our own time.’
Next, they wrote, ‘We happily do a lot of extra work in our own time,’ as well as, ‘We committed to this business so always volunteer to attend the events held.’

Another requirement is ‘We always help out our fellow team members without being asked,’ as well as, ‘We are always willing to go the extra mile,’ followed by, ‘We do it for the love not the money.’
The employee’s management also requires staff to ‘look forward to coming to work every day,’ as well as coming to work ‘even when unwell’ as they must ‘understand the impact it has on teammates.’
Another order reads, ‘We tell people when we are not feeling 100 per cent so they know why we are not our usual self,’ while a second demands, ‘We are open and honest and if there is something bothering us, we will talk about it.’
A further rule states, ‘We are happy to always contribute to the business in our own way which impacts positively’ while another reads, ‘We class ourselves as a family – not just colleagues.’
The final two requirements are, ‘We do not sit down – we understand this job means we are on the go all day,’ and, ‘We do not moan about our aches and pains – that’s life,’
Thousands of Redditors flocked to the comments to share their shock over the rules, as some urged the employee to either join a union or ‘run.’
One person wrote, ‘Most toxic list ever,’ while another said, ‘I’m actually low-level fuming, having read that.’
One horrified reader quipped, ‘Sounds a bit cult-y to me,’ while another urged, ‘Get out of there.’
Another suggested to the employee: ‘Join a union, break a rule and get fired, and sue.’
A fellow Redditor wrote, ‘The level of effort that went into making that inspirational poster is truly pitiful,’ while another said, ‘I’d say this is a small business run by a lunatic, and that there is no management team or HR.’
Another remarked: ‘That’s an update CV and hit LinkedIn if ever I saw it. Which is probably what management wants. With some unpaid voluntary redundancies.’
Regarding the rule that reads, ‘We do it for the love not the money,’ one person joked: ‘Hello Santander. Can I pay my mortgage with love not money this month? Maybe blow some kisses down the phone to you or something?’
Finally, another quipped: ‘With a bottle of Tippex that could be made to read very differently. We class ourselves as just colleagues. We do it for the money. We are always willing to go. We look for work everyday.’
Elsewhere, employees reveal ‘unspoken’ office rules everyone should know – from never microwaving fishy food to always taking more than one sick day.
