‘Elon Musk shopping for Liverpool can be a catastrophe – we can’t be a part of his recreation of Monopoly’

Liverpool Football Club‘s ownership will always be a divisive topic, particularly where the current incumbents Fenway Sports Group are involved.

To some, their tight purse strings make them as wicked as the devil himself. To others, they are an inoffensive background character in a football world where so many owners force themselves into the foreground – either directly or indirectly by using the clubs they own to wash their reputations free of ills being committed closer to home.

The truth is despite the onfield success, FSG have got a lot wrong in their tenure, that there is no escaping from. Surprisingly billionaires aren’t the complete saints that society wants to paint them to be, as the lucky few who have been able to achieve a level of “success” we’re told to aspire to.

By contrast, Liverpool was ranked as one of the most deprived areas in the UK in a 2019 survey – with Anfield itself ranked as one of the most deprived neighbourhoods. The region at large remains very politically charged, given its past mistreatment by Conservative governments.

Therefore, when club ownership interest comes along from a nation state or – say – a billionaire whose wealth recently grew exponentially after a right-wing president was elected, it’s no surprise that many stakeholders turn their noses up at the idea.

In this case, Donald Trump’s new ally Elon Musk‘s supposed interest in buying Liverpool FC will cause a lot of pre-emptive anger. It’s been clear for some time now that the Tesla Motors CEO’s movements are a deliberate attempt at a global powergrab.

Taking over one of the world’s most popular social media platforms, cosying up to the president-elect of the most powerful country – only to be appointed to his administration post-election – and his latest assault on the UK’s political landscape are all symptomatic of a man trying to ensure his influence is felt in all four corners of the planet.

The idea that our football club could be used as a pawn in this real-life, worldwide game of Monopoly is completely reprehensible. Musk stands in absolute opposition to the socialist ideals that many on Merseyside still subscribe to. Ideals that are engrained into the fabric of the football club thanks to the legacy of figures like Bill Shankly.

Not only that, Musk’s acceptance, promotion and use of hate speech will further malign sections of Liverpool’s support that need uplifting and celebrating in this current climate more than ever, thanks to the way he has used his platform.

His history of strong-arm tactics to take himself to the top of the organisations he’s been involved with could also represent an internal disaster at the football club, which could impact many involved, no less the playing staff. We don’t have to look too far down the East Lancs to see how bad ownership can lead to that coming to fruition.

So forget about the idea of what the richest man in the world being at the helm might mean for the club’s transfer policy and think of the bigger picture. Your bragging rights with your friends and family about “winning transfer windows” are not worth people’s livelihoods and feelings of safety.

Keep Elon Musk well away from Liverpool Football Club.
