Greggs followers spot product they’ve by no means seen earlier than in unlikely location

Shoppers were left thrilled after spotting a Greggs product on the high street that they had never seen before. However, you can’t buy it at any of the bakery’s 2,500 stores, as you will instead have to head to a supermarket. With more than 950 stores across the country and a multi-award-winning online shopping service, Iceland is popular thanks to its budget-friendly frozen items.

It also regularly comes out with new products, which are frequently shared on social media. Recently, a new item piqued shoppers’ attention when the Instagram account @vegan_food_uk shared an image of the returning Greggs’ Vegan Steak Bakes, available to bake at home but “sadly” unavailable directly from Greggs bakeries.

The page, which promotes accessible vegan food, news of product launches, recipes and more, shared an image highlighting the return of the vegan version of one of Greggs’ most popular products, the Steak Bake, and penned: “Greggs Vegan Steak Bakes are BACK! Anyone else miss these?

“Unfortunately not in Greggs themselves but they have just launched at Iceland Supermarkets to bake at home. The Veg Curry Bakes (which did launch at Greggs for Veganuary) are also being sold in Iceland”.

People shared their thoughts in the comments section. One person joked: “I feel like I’m in an abuse relationship with Greggs. They know I want vegan steak bakes and cheesy sausage bean melts but they keep gaslighting me by selling them everywhere else!”

Another simply dubbed the news “exciting” while a third pleaded: “Next vegan cheese and bean melt” and someone else added a GIF stating: “Shut up and take my money”.

There are more than 2,500 Greggs stores in the UK, and a few vegan items have become menu mainstays. Its popular vegan sausage roll is made with “approximately 96 layers of deliciously light puff pastry” which are then “wrapped around” its “own bespoke Quorn filling”.

On its website, the bakery branded the vegan sausage roll a “game changer” – but it’s not alone. Greggs also offers a vegan sausage breakfast roll, southern fried potato wedges, and a sweet potato bhaji, with long grain rice and chana masala-style sauce.

For sweet treats, its classic glazed ring doughnut is vegan, and has “all the splendour of the original, with a perfect dollop of deliciously glazed fondant icing”.

Greggs shows no signs of slowing down its expansion and, in 2021, launched its five year growth plan outlining its “ambition to reach significantly more than 3,000 shops in the UK in the longer term”.

The milestone 2,500th shop is located in a petrol forecourt at Sainsbury’s Cobham, Surrey, and marks the company’s eighth shop with Sainsbury’s, which brings the total number of shops with supermarket partners, including Asda and Tesco, to 50.
