Ruben Amorim remembers star who Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described as a ‘prime attacker’
Man Utd have triggered a recall clause in Joe Hugill’s loan deal at Wigan Athletic, with the forward set to return to Old Trafford after impressing in his limited League One action
Manchester United’s wonderkid Joe Hugill is set to strut his stuff back at Old Trafford after the higher-ups called time on his loan stint with Wigan Athletic.
The 21-year-old, dubbed a “top striker” by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, netted five times while he was knocking about with the Latics since the start of the 2024/25 season.
It’s a decent return for a youngster who cost the Red Devils a cool £300K from Sunderland. It’s been a right meteoric rise through United’s youth ranks for the Durham-born starlet, having impressed with both the U18s and then the U23s.
He impressed Solskajer with a performance against Liverpool – a game in which Amad Diallo also wowed, but it was Hugill who bagged the glowing praise from United’s very own Baby-Faced Assassin.
Solskjaer gushed: “If we go from that game [vs Liverpool], I’d pick Joe Hugill. Four goals by Hugill, he’s a top striker as well, we’re looking forward to seeing his development,” reports the Mirror.
So far, Hugill hasn’t graced the hallowed turf with the senior side, but that could be about to change.
Ruben Amorim’s squad has been struggling to find the back of the net, but it seems a tall order for Hugill to get his chance despite United activating the clause to recall him early from his loan.
The Red Devils have only managed to score 23 Premier League goals this season, with their £72million striker Rasmus Hojlund only netting four times, while fellow forward Joshua Zirkzee has added just three more.
Hugill’s return to Old Trafford follows a period of limited action, having clocked up just 49 minutes in his last five league matches. However, he did manage to find the net in the 17 minutes he was on the pitch against League One leaders Wrexham, although it ended in a 2-1 defeat for Wigan.
