The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has activated new Cold Weather Payments for residents in 51 postcode areas. Approximately 95,000 qualifying households in these regions will receive a £25 payment to help cover the additional cost of heating their homes during the current cold spell.

The new payments will cover 45 postcode areas around West Yorkshire, including Bradford, Halifax, and Huddersfield, and extend into parts of East Lancashire, including Burnley. Eligible households in another six postcode districts in North Yorkshire and County Durham will also benefit from the payments.

These latest payments were triggered by a seven-day period of sub-zero weather in these areas which began on January 4 and extends until Saturday. So far this winter, over 100,000 households have been eligible for Cold Weather Payments.

Cold Weather Payments are made to people in England and Wales who receive a range of benefits. A separate scheme operates in Northern Ireland along similar lines but in Scotland, support for heating bills is paid every winter and not linked to specific spells of cold weather, reports the Mirror.

An estimated 3.9 million people are eligible for Cold Weather Payments under the DWP scheme, with 1.2 million of these being Pension Credit recipients. Last year, a total of £9.1 million was paid out in 364,000 payments across England and Wales.

In certain areas of Cumbria, the Cold Weather Payments were triggered three times during separate cold spells last winter, resulting in eligible recipients receiving a total of £75. The DWP has stated that those claiming benefits such as Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Universal Credit, and Support for Mortgage Interest may be eligible for the Cold Weather Payment.

However, not everyone receiving these benefits will automatically receive a Cold Weather Payment, as there are several factors determining whether a payment will be made. Full details of eligibility can be found on GOV.UK.
