A former Premier League and England star’s latest venture in Turkish football lasted just five months as the top-flight side terminated the player’s contract.

Turkey – in similar fashion to Saudi Arabia – is becoming a second home to former Premier League icons, but one player’s spell in the nation has been ended prematurely.

The midfielder now finds his career at a crossroads and could return to England with a number of club’s able to make a potential offer to the surprise free agent.

Having initially impressed in the Turkish Super Lig last season with Caykur Rizespor, the 32-year-old moved to Eyupspor in the summer.

The club, managed by former Barcelona winger Arda Turan, hoped the former Premier League player would help lead the club’s survival fight.

However, the ex-Liverpool, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest star has now mutually agreed to leave the club after just five months as confirmed in a blunt statement.

Jonjo Shelvey departed the Premier League in 2023 after his two-and-a-half-year contract at Forest was similarly cut short following just eight months amid a fallout with former boss Steve Cooper.

Shelvey’s time at Eyupsor has now been ended with him having made a grand total of just six appearances for the European chasing club who sit fourth in the Super Lig.

A statement confirming his departure simply stated: ‘We have parted ways with professional football player Jonjo Shelvey by mutual consent.

‘We would like to thank Jonjo Shelvey for his contributions to our team and wish him success in his future career.’

Shelvey is now searching for a ninth senior club to represent and could return to England with his experience likely an attractive asset to Championship sides.

His availability as a free agent could tempt a number of teams to compete for his services though it remains to be seen whether Shelvey will take the remainder of the season away from action.

Championship leaders Burnley are amongst the club’s that have been linked with the former England international amid their push for promotion to the Premier League.

Shelvey has previously made 278 Premier League appearances while playing for Liverpool, Newcastle, Swansea, and Forest.
