The magic of the FA Cup is dead- or at least according to football fans.

Non-league side Tamworth had come inches away from a famous afternoon in the Midlands when the ball fell to Thomas McGlinchey in the Spurs area. The winger showed composure beyond his years and rolled the ball past one defender before unleashing a strike.

McGlinchey’s stike was saved by young Spurs shot-stopper Antonín Kinský – and thus ended a famous afternoon. Or it would have in every other season apart from this one.

For the first time in its history, replays had been scrapped in the third round due to the increasing amount of fixtures on the calendar. And fans are blaming past complaints from the likes of Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and ex-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

“People wonder why the FA Cup is dying – those Tamworth players robbed of a day playing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium because of whinging managers like Guardiola and Klopp,” one fan fumed.

While a second said: “This is what’s killed the FA Cup for me.. no replays Tamworth robbed out of a great return leg to the Spurs ground! And a third fumed: “Tamworth robbed of millions by getting rid of replays so that Spurs can play Newcastle in Australia 3 days after the season finishes. Rotten…”

Ange Postecoglou turned to the big guns for extra-time as Tamworth players, physically and mentally exhausted, looked out on their feet.

It took the Premier League side until extra-time to find the net against a side that is 96 places below them in the footballing pyramid. The game had never felt so broken.

The net had to be fixed before kick-off

It had been a classic FA Cup tie – shenanigans before the game meant Tamworth’s winger Beck-Ray Besongbap Enoru had to climb onto the shoulders of a team-mate and use some tape to fix the net.

He would almost break the deadlock minutes later.

From there Tamworth battened down the hatches and weathered the storm – giving as good as they got in a classic third round encounter.
