Earthquake hits off UK coast as ‘rooms shake violently’ in ninth quake of 2025
The UK has been hit by a series of earthquakes since the start of 2025, with the largest of those being detected just two days ago and being felt as far as Norway
A huge earthquake hit near the coastline of the UK – the biggest for several years. Since the start of 2025, several earthquakes have been detected across the country, with nine hitting in the first two weeks.
However, according to the British Geological Society, the ninth and latest of those was bigger than anything we’ve seen for years, hitting a whopping 4.1 on the Richter scale. The epicentre was around 220km off Bergen, Norway and 395km off the Northeast coast of Lerwick, Shetland Islands.
And despite not seeming like this would be something the UK would feel, it was strong enough for the BGS to register it – and they found that it struck at a depth of 16km.
It was strong enough for some locals in parts of Norway to feel, as one posted on social media: “it finally happened! I felt a rare Norway earthquake. Room was shaking.”
Another wrote: “We felt it around 30 mins ago here in Singsås, Norway. Rattled the furniture. My daughter saw her pc monitor shaking.”
It hit at around 8pm on Sunday, with its closest main UK land location outside of the Shetland Islands being Aberdeen.
It came just two days after one also hit near Blairlogie, Stirling, which measured 1.2 on the scale, at a depth of around two kilometres down.
And last week, a trio of major rumbles was felt, with the largest of the trio measuring 1.4 on the Richter scale, in Skelton, Cumbria – just a few hundred metres away from a stretch of the M6 motorway. It happened at 6.51pm on Wednesday, January 8, and was recorded at a depth of around 3km
Earlier that day, at around 2.48am, another one measuring 1.3 on the scale was recorded at 3km down in the Irish Sea, but was felt in West Blackpool.
And a third, which hit at 10.46pm last night, was found to be 7km down and measure 0.9 in Penrith. It took place just a few metres away from the famous Filter House holiday home – one of the UK’s most remote.
