The shocking discovery of a body forced the M1 motorway into lockdown on Monday afternoon. Both directions were closed off at around 3pm as Hertfordshire Police carried out their investigation.

Motorists travelling in both directions were forced to take a diversion around junctions five and six near Watford. After a few hours, police had reopened the southbound road at 6.30pm .

A Hertfordshire Police spokesperson said on Monday: “We were contacted earlier this afternoon after the body of a man was found in undergrowth at the side of the motorway between junctions five and six.

“Officers are currently working to establish the circumstances of the man’s death, which are currently unexplained, and will remain in the area this evening and tomorrow.”
