Marcus Rashford’s poised exit from Manchester United has taken a major blow after AC Milan striker Noah Okafor’s proposed transfer was scuppered.

The England star has been sidelined by Ruben Amorim after he admitted to wanting to take on a fresh challenge. United have been keen to find a new club for Rashford and the players’ representatives have been in Italy exploring possible solutions this month.

Milan emerged as one of the most likely destinations but a move has been complicated by the Rossoneri’s unwillingness to burden a considerable portion of Rashford’s £325,000-per-week salary. The Serie A giants are interested in an initial loan deal but have reservations over covering even half of the 27-year-old’s wages.

There appeared to be positive steps regarding a deal with Milan forward Okafor travelling to Germany to sign for RB Leipzig on an initial loan deal that could become permanent in the summer for around €25million (£21m).

However, that deal is now off after Sky Sports in Germany reported that the Bundesliga side have cancelled the transfer after the Swiss international’s medical tests were not approved by Leipzig’s staff and the forward is set to travel back to Milan.

The deal would have seemingly facilitated Milan making a move for Rashford by opening up a space in the squad and helping bolster Milan’s financial muscle in the deal. Rashford’s brother and agent Dane, has also been in Italy in an attempt to close a deal.

It’s not yet clear on the implications for Rashford’s potential switch to Milan, but it certainly makes an agreement between the two clubs harder to reach now the seven-time European champions won’t have the additional resources that Okafor’s move promised.

Rashford is reported to have several suitors abroad and in the Premier League, including Borussia Dortmund, he has also rebuffed interest from Turkey and Saudi Arabia. But almost halfway through the January transfer window, a concrete offer is yet to be submitted for the Carrington product.
