The deadly benefits of learning martial arts was one of the many topics discussed on the Mark Zuckerberg episode of the Joe Rogan Experience. In a wide ranging interview, the Facebook founder lauded jiu-jitsu training for the unintended virtues it brings to the workplace before Joe Rogan brought up another advantage – the ability to kill people.

The 40-year-old social media mogul, who was complemented on his “bigger jiu-jitsu neck” by Rogan, was on the popular podcast shortly after loosening posting rules on Facebook and Instagram and bringing Dana White onto the board of Meta. Zuckerberg said doing two hours of striking or grappling every morning helps him “deal with anything” and be a better person to be around.

He said: “After a couple of hours doing that in the morning, nothing else that day is going to stress you out that much. You can just deal with it.”

A couple of moments later Rogan brought up another benefit. He said: “It is also good to know you can kill people. It is a good thing to know if something goes sideways.”

Zuckerberg agreed, saying: “There is a certain confidence in that, yeah.”

Before Rogan continued: “It is an important skill. If you could put it in a pill, everybody would buy it. No one would say, I want to be the vulnerable guy walking around with a bunch of f***ing assassins. Nobody would say that.

“They would say, how much is the pill. Oh, it is two dollars. Give me one of those. Everyone would take that pill. It exists, it is just not a pill. It is a long journey of pain and discipline and trial and error and learning and being opened minded and being objective and being understanding of positions and asking questions and having good training partners and absorbing information and really being diligent with your skill acquisition work.”

The podcast host added: “Which is one of the most important parts of jiu-jitsu because training is so much fun – everybody just wants to roll. The best way to do it is just to drill. It is the most boring but really you should drill constantly. Jam those skills into your neurons where your brain knows exactly what to do in every position.

“It is such an intellectual pursuit and most people don’t think about it that way because you have to manage your mind while you’re moving your body, managing anxieties, trying to figure out when to hit the gas and when to control position and recover.

“There is so much going on in training that applies to virtually any stressful thing that you will ever experience in your life. Along with it, you get this skill where you can kill people.

“You shouldn’t kill people let me be clear. I am not saying it is a good thing to kill people.”

Zuckerberg added: “It’s great. It has opened up a lot about how I think about stuff.”
