Funeral of Brit dad-of-two, John George killed in Spain cancelled say household
John George, was found by Spanish authorities earlier this month, but his family has been hit with another devastating blow as his funeral is unexpectedly cancelled
The funeral of Irish dad shot and killed in Spain has been postponed indefinitely, plunging his family in a state of uncertainty.
John Hardy, also known by the name John George, went missing in Alicante just before Christmas until Spanish authorities found his body earlier this month.
His funeral was originally set for Friday January 24, with plans for his body to be viewed at his mother’s home in west Belfast starting Monday. But according to his sister, all the arrangements have now been scrapped.
John’s sister Courtney posted on her social media, stating: “All funeral arrangements cancelled until further notice due to circumstances beyond our control.”
John grieving sister assured that “updated arrangements will follow in due course.”
The Belfast family has thanked the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust for helping bring the father-of-two’s remains back to Ireland.
The dad’s remains were flown into Dublin from Spain on Thursday night, where they were collected by undertakers from O’Neill’s Funeral Directors, to be driven across the border to Belfast.
Courtney George said: “Without this amazing charity we would never be able to get John home to where he belongs.”
John had vanished while holidaying in Alicante and his last contact with relatives was on December 14. His disappearance sparked a search by both local friends and relatives after he missed his flight on December 18, reports Belfast Live .
The intensive search involved his parents Billy and Sharon, brother Darren, sisters Courtney and Caitlin, and a friend-and-family support group of approximately 50 from the North of Ireland who said they “knew he was dead.” His body was tragically discovered last week.
Spanish authorities arrested a 32-year-old man from the Czech Republic in connection with John’s murder. He has since been released on bail. The Spanish police are also looking for a second suspect who is believed to have fled the area.
