Darts ace Gerwyn Price has left Shaun Murphy in an awkward position after seemingly hitting a 147 snooker break.

The Iceman, who won the PDC World Championship in 2021, is also a handy snooker player and has a full-sized table at his home in south Wales. The Iceman plays regularly, revealing in an interview before the 2025 World Championship that his highest break was 108. He joked to The Guardian: “I won’t do a Shaun Murphy and lie about having a 147!”

Murphy claims to have completed the unique hat-trick of a 147 break, a nine-darter and a hole-in-one in golf – a boast doubted by many darts and snooker players and fans. He once said: “I think I’m in a club of one at the moment.”

Now, Price, 39, appears to have achieved snooker’s equivalent of a nine-dart finish and even has video evidence to prove it, even if he suffered a technical hitch. Earlier this month, the Welshman posted a clip to Instagram of him putting together the break and captioned it: “When you make your first 147 break [shocked face emoji]. And my phone dies.”

Price and Murphy agree that a 147 break is tougher than a nine-darter. Price said back in 2022: “I’d say a 147 is harder, because I know how tough snooker is. But then a snooker player might say a nine-darter is harder, but I’d definitely say a 147 is harder than a nine-darter. But also, you can fluke a 147, you can fluke a ball and still be on it, I can’t fluke in darts.”

The debate continued when Murphy took part in the recent Paddy Power Perfect Challenge alongside fellow snooker star Mark Williams and darts champions Luke Humphries and Michael van Gerwen. Although he hit a maximum break, Murphy’s display on the oche was, in his words, “rubbish”.

As he offered an excuse, he pleaded: “I haven’t played darts for 15 years, can I just say, and then I was ambushed and asked to throw three darts in front of Michael van Gerwen, Luke Humphries, the world’s press and media, Mark Williams. I was so nervous. Then I nearly threw one and nearly knocked the scorer out!”

Price and Murphy have been busy making waves in their respective sports this week. Price reached the Bahrain Darts Masters final, dispatching Luke Littler in the quarter-finals, only to be bested by Stephen Bunting.

Meanwhile, Murphy secured his spot in the semi-finals of the Masters at Alexandra Palace. He is playing Mark Allen for the right to face Judd Trump or Kyren Wilson in Sunday’s final.
