Luke Littler paraded his PDC World Darts Championship trophy around Old Trafford before watching his beloved Manchester United produce a dismal second half display in their loss to Brighton.

Ruben Amorim’s side lost 3-1 to Brighton, with the score sitting at 1-1 at half-time. United found themselves 1-0 down on five minutes with Yankuba Minteh opening the scoring for the Seagulls.

United responded through Bruno Fernandes shortly after from the penalty spot, before Littler took to the pitch at Old Trafford to show off the huge trophy he won earlier this month when he defeated Michael van Gerwen at the Alexandra Palace.

The 17-year-old wandered out onto the pitch, holding aloft the World Darts Championship final trophy, which he won by beating Van Gerwen 7-3 at the beginning of January.

However, while it was a nice moment for Littler to show off his silverware to the 75,000 fans at Old Trafford, his afternoon immediately got worse when United returned to action after the break.

They almost went 2-1 down after half-time when Joao Pedro thought he had scored only for a VAR reprieve after it was spotted that Jan Paul van Hecke had kicked Diogo Dalot’s foot in the build-up. However, it did not take long for Brighton to score their second.

On the hour mark, Kaoru Mitoma crept in at the back post to score from close range to give the Seagulls the lead.

And then on 76 minutes, the game was essentially handed to Brighton when Andre Onana fumbled a cross which was then converted by Georginio Rutter, making it 3-1 to Fabian Hurzeler’s side.

And following the disappointing result for United and Littler, fans were quick to chime in on social media saying the 17-year-old’s PDC Darts World Championship trophy would be the only silverware Old Trafford would be seeing anytime soon.

“Only trophy they’ll see at Old Trafford for many years,” wrote one fan. A second said: “Imagine being that starved for trophies that you have to get a fan to bring his to the stadium.”

A third said: “The only trophy being lifted in that stadium this season.” A fourth wrote: “He’s showing them he can win a trophy before them.” And a fifth said: “The closest Man United are getting to a Trophy this season.”
