Elon Musk appeared to mimic a Nazi salute twice while giving a speech at Trumps’ inauguration, according to eagle-eyed viewers.

Onlookers took to the billionaire’s social media platform, X, to share a video lasting just nine seconds, which showed Elon following a motivational speech on Monday, January 20. In it, he holds a hand to his heart before raising his hand. While many ignored the action, some noticed the seemingly strange movement and took to social media to discuss their suspicions.

Trump’s inauguration attracted many A-listers, and notably several billionaires. Musk was joined by Amazon owner Jeff Bezos and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg among others.

In the short clip, Musk places a hand to his heart and then aggressively straightens his arm into what users are accusing to be a “Nazi salute”. He did this twice, one to the front of the crowd, and one with his back turned.

Over this, he gave his thanks to the crowd, as well as the American voters who backed the Republican party last year.

After this, he held a hand to his heart and smiled widely. Along with the video, a user captioned the post: “Elon Musk gave two back to back Nazi salutes at the Trump inauguration parade.”

Commenters flocked to the post with their own theories. One wrote: “I can’t believe what I’m seeing here! This needs to stop.”

Another added: “Going to be great for Tesla sales.” A third said: “Elon Musk just did a NAZI SALUTE to the MAGA crowd at the Capitol One Arena!!!”

Others were more confused, not convinced they were seeing right. “Was that a Nazi salute Elon?” asked a fourth.

Musk has joined Trump with leading the new Department of Government Efficiency (Doge). In a statement on social media, Trump said Musk – along with former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy – would “dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures and restructure federal agencies”.

Since the inauguration, there have been a total of three lawsuits against the new department. According to these, the new organisation “violates federal transparency laws”.

It appears Musk’s final goal is to colonise Mars. This new role could help expand his standing, “so long as it is not smothered by bureaucracy,” according to him.

He hopes to “optimise government efficiency” by Trump’s side.
