Greggs has been forced to recall one of their most popular items after a serious health risk. The Greggs Steak Bake twin-pack recall concerns its frozen steak bakes.

The items sold at Iceland were found to have been mislabelled and contain hidden sulphites – which is a danger for anyone with a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide or sulphites.

It turns out that instead of steak bakes, the packs actually have sausage, bean and cheese melts, which could trigger allergy-like reactions such as wheezing, chest tightness, and coughing, and in rare cases, even anaphylaxis, warns Allergy UK. The specific pack size in question is 280g with a best before date of May 19, 2025.

Greggs has reassured customers that this hiccup only affects this particular batch and no other products are involved. If you’ve snagged one of these potentially risky items, they are warning customers not to eat them.

Greggs has advised you to return it to any Iceland store where you’ll get your money back, no receipt needed. Apologising for the mix-up, Greggs stated: “We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused.”, reports the Mirror.

For those needing more info on this recall, give Greggs’ customer care team a bell on 08081473447 or drop an email to getintouch@greggs.co.uk.

And if you’re wondering what product recall notices are all about, they’re basically a heads-up to consumers about identified issues with products that might be harmful.

Products can be pulled off the shelves for a whole host of reasons, from safety scares – think dodgy risks to customers – to quality quibbles when something’s not up to scratch. The Food Standards Agency is the big boss of alerting us when grub goes bad.

They’ve got two moves: “withdrawn”, where products are pulled from the aisles, or “recalled”, which is when you need to hoof it back to the shop with the dodgy item. If your nosh has been mingling with nasty pathogens that could leave you hugging the loo, or if there’s a surprise side of plastic or metal thanks to a factory hiccup, it’s recall time.

And don’t forget about those allergen blunders – missing or muddled info means a product’s have to be removed.
