The Premier League have released a statement after Arsenal’s youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly was handed a straight red card in their Premier League clash with Wolves.
The Premier League have released a statement explaining why Myles Lewis-Skelly was sent off.
Deep into the first half Wolves tried to break from a corner and Matt Doherty was charging into some space, but he was tripped by the Arsenal youngster. Michael Oliver was quick to brandish the red card – and that was confirmed by VAR.
“The referee’s call of a red card for Lewis-Skelly was checked and confirmed by VAR, who deemed his challenge to have been serious foul play,” the Premier League Match Centre account posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.
However, Arsenal fans were left furious on social meda: “Myles Lewis Skelly just got sent off for this.. He wasn’t even last man? How is that a red card what!”
“This league is so corrupt man – never seen anything like it,” a second fumed. And another added: “Myles Lewis-Skelly has just been given a simply outrageous red card for Arsenal Refereeing (even with the help of VAR) is just embarrassing in this country…”
Pat Nevin, working for BBC Radio 5 Live, was dumbfounded: “I’m stunned by that red card. I’m staggered. It’s a cynical trip. I have never seen that in my life.”
Tim Sherwood was also confused, telling the Soccer Saturday studio it should have been overturned. However, Mike Dean pointed out there had been contact above Doherty’s ankle.
