Surrey residence with FIFTEEN bedrooms and a marriage venue might be yours for £6m

  • The home dates from 1896 and sits on a sprawling 27-acre estate

A 15-bedroom family home near Guildford, Surrey – which also has space to host wedding receptions – has gone on sale for £6million.

Grade II-listed Greyfriars House, which spans 14,000 square feet and has nine bedrooms, was designed in 1896 by architect Charles Voysey.

The property, which sets on 27 acres, has a slew of grand rooms, including a large reception hall, a double-height drawing room and a bar. There’s also a cinema room, snug and two offices.

Green-fingered buyers will be right at home, as the property’s formal gardens were originally designed by renowned horticulturist and garden designer Gertrude Jekyll.

There is also a tennis court, pond, orchard, and swimming pool on site, with the latter requiring some restoration.

The property retains many original features, including copper fireplaces, wood-panelled rooms, high-vaulted ceilings, and Voysey’s signature heart-shaped motifs, which appear on door hinges, letterboxes, and even the house keys.

As well as the main house, there is a separate cottage in the grounds and other outbuildings which could be used to house guests, family and friends or staff.

Speaking to This is Money, Beatrice Knight, of estate agency DDRE Global, said: ‘Greyfriars House is a truly unique opportunity to own a masterpiece of architectural history, offering both an exceptional family home and an ideal venue for hosting events.’

She added: ‘Greyfriars House and its 27-acre estate and was built in 1896 for the novelist and playwright Julian Sturgis whose many works include the libretto for the Sullivan opera Ivanhoe.

‘Other owners include Philip Lyle of the sugar company Tate and Lyle.

‘The Grade II-listed house was designed by Charles Voysey who is considered as the father of the Arts and Crafts movement, with gardens by the prominent garden designer Gertrude Jekyll’.

Knight continued: ‘With so much space, the new owner could either continue the wedding business or with the right planning permissions, create a boutique hotel or residential conference venue.

‘But many will want to keep this landmark building to themselves as a spacious family home.

‘The house was sensitively restored by its current owner who has furnished it with modern furniture and some original Voysey pieces.’

The grand property is located on the North Downs in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, meaning it boasts panoramic southerly views of rolling countryside.

Despite its tranquil setting, Greyfriars House is located near Guildford and Farnham, both of which have decent transport links to London.

How to find a new mortgage

Borrowers who need a mortgage because their current fixed rate deal is ending, or they are buying a home, should explore their options as soon as possible.

What if I need to remortgage?

Borrowers should compare rates, speak to a mortgage broker and be prepared to act.

Homeowners can lock in to a new deal six to nine months in advance, often with no obligation to take it.

Most mortgage deals allow fees to be added to the loan and only be charged when it is taken out. This means borrowers can secure a rate without paying expensive arrangement fees.

Keep in mind that by doing this and not clearing the fee on completion, interest will be paid on the fee amount over the entire term of the loan, so this may not be the best option for everyone.

What if I am buying a home?

Those with home purchases agreed should also aim to secure rates as soon as possible, so they know exactly what their monthly payments will be.

Buyers should avoid overstretching and be aware that house prices may fall, as higher mortgage rates limit people’s borrowing ability and buying power.

How to compare mortgage costs

The best way to compare mortgage costs and find the right deal for you is to speak to a broker.
